Countable and uncountable nouns

Countable and uncountable nouns are categories of nouns based on whether they can be counted or not.

  1. Countable Nouns:

    • Definition: Countable nouns are individual items or people that can be counted as separate entities.
    • Examples:
      • "Three dogs are playing in the park."
      • "I have two books on my shelf."
      • "There are five students in the classroom."
    • Usage: Countable nouns can be used in both singular and plural forms. You can use numbers and quantifiers (e.g., many, few) with countable nouns.
  2. Uncountable Nouns:

    • Definition: Uncountable nouns, also known as mass nouns, are substances, concepts, or things that cannot be counted as separate entities. They are considered as a whole or a mass.
    • Examples:
      • "I need some water."
      • "He has a lot of information."
      • "She enjoys listening to music."
    • Usage: Uncountable nouns are usually used in singular form and do not have a plural form. You cannot use a number directly with uncountable nouns; instead, you use words like "some," "a lot of," "a piece of," etc.

Note:

  • Some nouns can be both countable and uncountable depending on the context. For example, "coffee" is usually uncountable (e.g., "I drink coffee"), but it can be countable when referring to cups of coffee (e.g., "I ordered two coffees").

Understanding whether a noun is countable or uncountable is crucial for using the correct determiners, quantifiers, and expressions in English sentences.

Berikut adalah beberapa contoh penggunaan countable (dapat dihitung) dan uncountable (tidak dapat dihitung) nouns:
